April 3, 2024
Fishing in Ketchikan, Alaska, in May and June offers opportunities to catch various species such as salmon, halibut and lingcod. Lingcod season opens on May 16th and non-residents can retain one per day 30-40 inches in length or over 55 inches with one in possession.
Chinook also called king salmon are catch and release although it’s not recommended due to the high mortality rate until June 1st when it opens in small “terminal harvest” areas near local fish hatcheries. The typical date it opens statewide is June 15th with area increase in size June the 8th typically.
The halibut regulations are one per person per day while on charter of a fish that is 40 inches or under in length. They are commonly called “chickens” and are the best to eat. You can on charter catch and retain one over 80 inches in length and this fish will be at the side of the boat weighing in 275 pounds!!! We almost always release these back into the ocean for a few reasons. First is the millions of eggs this fish will drop annually. Also the meat on the large fish tends to be dry and grainy.
The weather during this time is typically mild, with temperatures ranging from 45°F to 65°F (7°C to 18°C). However, it’s essential to be prepared for rain and variable weather conditions common in Southeast Alaska.
For fishing, waterproof and breathable clothing is essential to stay dry and comfortable. Bring layers, including a waterproof jacket, pants, and boots, as well as warm underlayers such as fleece or thermal wear. A good quality pair of gloves can also be helpful for handling fish and keeping your hands warm.
