Captain Colby
I won my first youth trout derby at age 3 and placed in the top 30 of our annual king salmon derby at 6. When asked what I wanted to do with my winnings, I told my parents, "I want a Lund skiff." We found an old Lund with a 25hp Evinrude, and within a couple of years, I was catching salmon and halibut on my own.
At 9, I started deckhanding on charters, mainly with my dad. When he wasn't running trips, I walked the docks looking for work-or fished from them myself. After six summers, I saved up, bought a boat and a salmon trolling permit at 15, and spent every summer fishing commercially until I graduated.
I then moved into the dive fishery, gaining access to bigger boats and more permits. But after years battling brutal winter storms and being away 11 months a year, I sold my commercial operation and earned my master captain's license to guide in the summers. I kept one salmon permit to fish lightly in the winter while still guiding.
Born and raised in Ketchikan, Alaska, I spend over 250 days a year on the water. My lifelong experience has sharpened my ability to track fish movements and feeding patterns, and I wouldn't trade this life for anything.
